Character
Name: Lleld Kemberaene, Lleld, Lady Mayhem, Your Grace
Canon: Dragonlords (there is no official title for the series)

Pull-point: Post Dragon and Phoenix, after everyone’s gone back to the Keep.

Power Opt-in post link: Here.

Content Opt-out post link: Nothing worse than the perils of a very long life is likely to come up.

Age: Unknown, well over a thousand - we'll say two thousand fifty, for lack of specifics.

Gender/Sex: Female

Appearance: Her human form is that of an adult woman, one with proportionate dwarfism so that she is only about four foot three. While she also has a young face and is sometimes mistaken for a child, aside from her height she's not slim or small. Her voice has a pseudoIrish lilt to it. Otherwise she has brown eyes and thick, curly, very red hair. For now I’m using Allison Iraherta as her PB.

She also has a winged dragon form mostly colored the same red as her hair but with an ivory belly and blazing red eyes. It's also affected by her dwarfism and is roughly elephant-sized, which for that canon is dinky.

History: In this setting dragons are godlike. Dragon souls are melded with human souls and then split in two to each be born and raised as "truehumans", who eventually discover their weredragon natures. Seen as the highest authority around and perfectly neutral, they arbitrate human conflicts. In time their human souls die and they join "truedragon" society.

Lleld Kemberaene was born to hillfolk, a sickly and undersized child. She wound up joining a troupe of traveling entertainers, performing as a tumbler, a wire-walker, and a juggler. At some point there was a long, tortuous leadup as her senses fluctuated and she heard voices, culminating in the moment when she first Changed and was recognizable as a Dragonlord.

Immediately after that she was sent to distant Dragonskeep, tutored in history, language, and lore, and accepted into the near-isolationist Dragonlord society. From time to time she was called to arbiter disputes, investigate odd doings, or fight things humans couldn’t handle well, but the keep in the mountains was her home. At some point her “soultwin” was born and Changed and met her. Jekkanadar Surael bore the other halves of Lleld Kemberaene’s souls, but unlike many other pairs they weren’t basically identical and could stand to not do absolutely everything together and even be apart without purple prose about incompleteness. Still, going out into the world they usually went together, and when not going openly as Dragonlords they passed themselves as entertainers. Small as she was, she needed small horses, and Llysanyins were bred small for her.

Four hundred years later she was involved with a mercenary group, befriending one and preventing him from killing himself during the Change. She took Linden Rathan under her wing, delighting in calling him “little one” because he was twice her height. Six hundred years after that he came back to the Keep with his soultwin, the tormented Maurynna Kyrissaean, who Lleld took care of.

News came of a truedragon imprisoned in a distant land, guarded with the magic of a trapped pheoenix. When a force of truedragons was wrecked by strange magics, Lleld pushed for sending a small band of Dragonlords there in the guise of entertainers. She worked with her soultwin, Linden, Maurynna, and some of their truehuman friends to learn the language and come up with acts involving their Llysanyins. They made their way to the kingdom, found that they had been lured there as a trap and were betrayed, and escaped. Lleld ordered the party split so Maurynna could go free the dragon and led the rest off. Later, they all Changed and wrecked some magic rocks, Lleld having to go out of her way to heal her incompetent soultwin when he got himself injured. The party reunited, with the inclusion of another new Dragonlord, and they all went home.

Personality: Lleld Kemberaene is really two people, Lleld and Kemberaene. Kemberaene is her dragonsoul. Extrapolating from other, more active dragons, she’s inhuman and angry and normally passive, only ever casting vague impulses, or generating great wrath at soul-destroying magic or abused dragons. She "sleeps", dormant but aware, unless and until Lleld decides to wake her up, probably just in advance of choosing to die, which is unlikely to be anytime soon.

Until that time her humansoul Lleld is the runner of the show. She seems like comic relief, rumormongering, eavesdropping, coming up with bizarre theories about this and that, and making wagers and crude jokes. Seen as childish, she is curious, stubborn, wildly silly, and hugely friendly. It's rare for her to be subdued or depressed. She stamps and glowers when her temper's set off on minor things. Her confidence is almost always at a towering high that many people find foolhardy.

Still she has plenty of empathy and can tone herself down and leave off a sensitive topic. Often Lleld acts as mentor and confidante to her juniors, downplaying her concern for them with humor. She has a strong tendency to nurture. Despite her silly side she does legitimately see herself as older and responsible, and can be highly thoughtful. She can put aside her impulsive side to take charge and plan things out with ruthless pragmatism. When her temper is truly roused, usually in someone's defense, she is cold and regal and shows a degree of insight that surprises those who've been her friend for centuries.

As a Dragonlord she's "fallen out of time"; it’s possible to stand transfixed lost in memories for a few minutes, jokes never get old, and a century seems like no time at all. Most Dragonlords cultivate a degree of formality and distance from short-lived "truehumans". Lleld disregards this and makes friends and takes care of whom she likes, but has reflected soberly that truehumans last "like moths in a flame".

Abilities: Non-special things: high coordination, excellent sense of balance, horseback riding, some fighting, lying and convincing.

To change shape, turns into a sparkling red mist that resolves into human or dragon form. Only doable with enough space, takes effort and can't be done when too tired. Dies if cold iron touches the mist. Injuries in one form carry to the other. Clothing changes with her, but not luggage.

Dragon skills: flies with the aid of magic, not that fast, can't carry struggling cattle safely, very agile, has claws and long fangs. Short-range fire breath in two forms. Lethal fire scorches stone and can hurt her. Also can breathe healing fire, which may not 'take' on magical injuries and causes hives on those 'allergic' to it. Can sense magic nearby and know if it’s fueled by death or involves trapped souls. Scales not impervious to cold iron. Can't speak out loud.

Inherent, passive abilities: Not quite immortal but very long lived. Unharmed by nonmagical heat and fire. Immune to non magical, non dragonsbane drugs. Learns languages very fast. Faster and more keen of senses than human, with long distance "dragonsight". Much much stronger than she should be. Doesn't have to eat as often as humans except when recovering from much use of magic.

Spells: Get fire to burn hotter or cooler, coax flame into catching, order small fires to go out, control local temperature, conjure and control numerous coldfires in any color. Coldfires are floating balls of heatless fire, usually fist-sized, immune to elements. They can be physically grabbed and moved around, or she can direct them with her mind. Can direct it so that in her absence it stays put, follows someone, or leads them somewhere. Coldfire will last a day or so, or disappear when banished.

Mindspeech: Not mind reading. Can be "shouted" or restricted to a few nearby. Can send images and bursts of sensation. Done enough to someone, a two-way connection is formed and they can speak back, or when the connection is closed signal her to open it. "Tone of voice" conveys state of mind. Two-way connection works over a few hundred miles, longer when there are mythical creatures on the way. Can partyline more people into connection.

Weak to: Cold iron in the blood, magical fire, poisonous dragonsbane, soul-manipulating magic.

Finally, poorly explained ability to tell the future. Marked tendency to come up with “wild predictions” that come true. Part of that is probably her knowledge of people and her ear for gossip, but it may be a power. Let’s disable that.

Inventory: Her torc of rank, silver and clearly ancient with a gem-eyed dragon head at each end. You need to be stronger than a truehuman to pry it away from her neck. Tack and a saddle and a blanket for Miki, a cloak, a clearly ancient crystal-hilted dagger.

Anything else: Dragonlords all have a Marking that is reflected in both human and dragon forms, usually something inherited in their human families. Birthmarks, webbed digits, odd-colored eyes, extra fingers, a withered leg, colorblindness… Lleld’s is her size.

Animal companion info Lleld has the Llysanyin mare Miki.

Appearance: Unlike most Llysanyins Miki is, well, basically a pony. She’s under five feet tall at the withers and has a stout, broad-backed appearance. Her coat is blood bay or rich orange brown, with a black mane and tail and long “feathers” of fur on her lower legs, mostly covering her hooves.

People universally think Llysanyins look good, at least if the Llysanyins are clean. Horse-lovers think they’re gorgeous even when filthy.

Personality: Miki is deeply loyal to Lleld, protective of her, and dislikes it when her rider is parted from her for more than, say, a week, requiring cosseting to feel better about this. They’re well suited; Miki loves performing, and will also play at being disloyal when asked to do things sometimes, trying to scuttle away and being caught by the tail, then hanging her head.

She’s not likely to allow another rider, but it could happen. Like most of her kind she’s proud and has a temper, snapping when annoyed and outright biting when annoyed further. That’ll leave a nice bruise; her temper’s not bad enough to cause further injury without enough cause. She can be impressed by a stallion.

She can “chuckle” and make low conversational noises, but not speak. Llysanyins can communicate with one another, and a little with horses, but apparently not with people, nor can they be Mindspoke.
Abilities: Llysanyins are “the children of the west wind from the land of the star-kindred, the land beyond the sun”. They can live at least three hundred years, and bond very strongly with their riders. They’re very surefooted and have greater speed, endurance, and sturdiness than horses, though they can still put a hoof wrong, get exhausted, or even kill themselves galloping for hours on end. In a fight they can casually kill people with their hooves or bite through bone. Miki has to work for it a little more, being small, but she’s capable.

Miki is smart. She can’t follow along with a more refined debate, but she can understand most commonplace stuff, comprehending insults and compliments and orders, apply judgement, and think creatively. Her tack includes a bridle without a bit. She has a degree of authority over normal horses and can communicate slightly with them.

If she doesn’t want someone on her back they immediately end up on the ground, and if she does she’s a beautifully smooth, stable ride. Miki has a trick riding routine with Lleld that terrifies onlookers.

The mare is part of a long line of undersized Llysanyin horses bred for Lleld. Llysanyins can breed with normal horses and produce half-Llysanyins with diluted virtue.
